Having a self-hosted WP blog means access to hundreds of WordPress plugins that helps in increasing the functionality of your blog.
You have three methods, by which you can install WordPress plugins,
- Installing plugin from the WordPress dashboard
- Installing plugin by uploading .zip folder to WordPress
- Installing by FTP
I would recommend FTP method only when you don’t have permission to install from the dashboard by the web hosting service which is rare and also means you have a bad web hosting service. Let me guide you through the other two methods.
Installing plugin from the WordPress dashboard
Installing plugin from the WordPress dashboard is the easiest method of the two but you must be warned that there are only limited free plugins in the WordPress plugin directory. If your desired plugin falls under this category you got yourself a nice deal. You have to access your WordPress admin area and select Plugins > Add new.
In the new window that appears, type the name of the plugin or the desired function you are looking for at the search bar. A list of the desired plugin and those related to it appears.
Pick up the plugin that best covers what you require and click on the ‘Install now’ button. Now WordPress will download the particular plugin and you will see a success message with a link to activate the selected plugin.
Select Activate plugin to make the plugin actually work on your blog. That’s it; you have successfully installed a WordPress plugin for your site through WP dashboard and Search settings.
Installing plugin by uploading .zip folder to WordPress
Paid plugins can’t be installed just like free WordPress plugins. Paid plugins will not be listed in the WordPress plugin directory.
To install and activate paid plugins you have an Upload option at the Add new plugin page in the admin area.
Before that you should download the plugin from the source file which will be in .zip format. Now in the Add Plugins page you would see an Upload Plugin option adjacent to the title of the page.
A new plugin upload window appears. You need to select the choose file button and click the plugin file that you just downloaded in your computer.
Click the Install now button for the WordPress to upload the plugin file and install it on your site. On completion you will receive a success message stating that the installation is over.
After the installation, select the Activate plugin option to activate the installed plugin on your website. That’s it; you have now successfully installed the desired WP plugin on your WordPress blog.
