Fix Your IP has been flagged for potential security violations

You must be aware that apart from being a great blogging platform that satisfies all your needs, WordPress also provide a lot of third party plugins that enrich the whole blogging experience.

Jetpack is one such Plugin for WordPress which enables a great deal of features.  Protect is one of those features that provides more security for your WordPress website. This security feature safeguards your website from brutal attacks that can take down your website.

potential security violations

There is a glitch though. After you enable this Protect feature and come back again to the website after logging out, you will be shown the following error:

Your IP (X. X. X.  X ) has been flagged for potential security violations. Find out more…

You can check your I.P by visiting WhatismyIP.

This error would make Login to your website completely impossible. To fix it, you would have to login and enter your IP address data. But it’s not possible as you can’t login now.

The Protect feature of Jetpack plugin is to deny authorization to your websites from those IP addresses which are not approved to login to your website. But you forgot to provide a list of authorized IP address. So how to fix this problem? There are three ways to do this:

Configure along with Jetpack installation

Do not log out of your website without configuring it when you install Jetpack plugin for the first time. Provide a list of IP addresses which you will use to login to your website when you configure the protect option in Jetpack plugin. These IP addresses are known as Whitelist IP addresses. These are the IP addresses that you authorize or allow for login to your website.

Steps to follow:

  • Do not logout from your website when you enable Jetpack plugin and access the settings of the same.
  • From the various Jetpack options, choose Protect.
  • Select configure.
  • A new page called Whitelist Management appears.
  • Now list out the IP addresses that you will use to login to your website and so that the Jetpack may never block it.

Coding method

  • Click open the FTP client you use to upload Website files to the Web server.
  • If you do not use any FTP client then just login to your website’s CPanel.
  • Access public_html folder.
  • Download ‘wp-config. php’ (create a copy of the download file before making any change)
  • Set an IP address as JETPACK_IP_ADDRESS_OK constant and add it to your ‘wp-config. php’ file, so that the IP address is whitelisted.
  • You will have to add the following in the coding lines of ‘wp-config.php’ file:

define (‘JETPACK_IP_ADDRESS_OK’, ‘X. X. X. X’) ;

(The X. X. X. X is your IP address)

  • Upload this file to the same folder and replace it.
  • If at all you have done anything wrong and not able to login, just upload the previously created copy of the downloaded ‘wp-config. php’ file and replace it.

Renaming Plugins folder

Its ok, if you don’t want to do the coding, here is another simple yet effective method,

  • Click open the FTP client you use to upload Website files to the Web server.
  • If you do not use any FTP client then just login to your website’s CPanel.
  • Access public_html folder.
  • Get into the wp-content folder.
  • Choose plugins folder and rename the file into something else.
  • Now try to login into your website
  • Jetpack plugin will seem missing but access the same plugin folder and rename it to its original name.
  • Website will work great.

Use any one of the three methods to solve the issue and be able to login to your website again. I hope you like this tutorial and don’t forget to share this in your social circle and hit a like button our our social profiles.
